in Sudbury! Your support counts!
Sudbury Food Connections Network and Seeds of Diversity
are helping to sponsor
Sudbury's first Seedy Sunday on Sunday, February 21st, at Market
Square. The event will start at 10:00 am with a seed packaging workshop - bring your
seeds and we will help you organize and package them for the exchange. The seed
exchange will start at 10:30 and end at 11:30. Left over seeds will be sold to
raise funds for community gardens.
Dr. Stephen Monet will speak on the Sudbury Biodiversity Action Plan and
then Dr.
David Pearson will present on the how our northern climate is changing.
Then learn about growing from seed from Enzo Floreani, northern bee keeping from Doug Tompsett and pick up a few short
season gardening tips from Ron Lewis. The
Master Gardeners will also have a booth to answer your gardening questions. Northern Flavours and Eat Local Sudbury will be there to offer local food
products and local wares. Also - there will be environmental activities for kids!
What is
Seedy Sunday?
Seedy
Sunday is a way for local seed savers to exchange
seeds, and network with other gardeners.
When local seeds are saved they are aclimatized to the to the
local environment and contribute to food
biodiversity. Seed exchange???
Bring
any extra seeds you have so that you can exchange them
for different ones from other local gardeners.
Put a small amount of seeds in each package, and label
them well - add growing instructions if possible.
The actual seed exchange (or barter) will
take place from 10:30
to 11:30 am. Seed
Packaging Workshop will help! Volunteers
will be available to help you package your seeds for the exchange from
10:00 am to 10:30 am. How do I exchange my seeds?
You
will get a ticket stub when you leave your seed
packets with the volunteers. You will then be able use
the stub to barter for seeds from other gardeners.
After the exchange ends, any extra seeds can be
donated for use in several local community gardens. For
more information on seed saving and biodiversity,
visit Seeds of Diversity at www.seeds.ca
. What kinds of seeds can I bring?
Simply
package any leftover seeds you might have, even
if they are purchased ones, into a small envelope, and
label them well. Label them if they are
Certified Organic. Who should go? Everyone! Seedy
Sunday is open to the public and is free -
donations at the door to support community gardens and
non-perishable items for local food banks would be
appreciated. What
about children's activities? Bring
your children and their friends so that they can learn
about gardening, perhaps they will be inspired to
start a back yard garden next summer! There will
be lots of kids games and activities! Share your knowledge! Bring
your stories of saving
seeds, growing northern
heritage plants, and how you are
protecting biodiversity! Local
Food Vendors! Local food
vendors Eat Local Sudbury! and Northern Flavours will be there to serve healthy nutritious treats!
