The SFCN has a vision of food secure communities with the Sudbury and Manitoulin Districts that have zero hunger, healthy food choices, local food resources and a sustainable environment.

Many exciting projects and partnerships that improve the food security of Sudburians are either happening or on the horizon and the SFCN is in need of a mandate for our involvement in the future of our food system.  This is very timely as the Food Charter workshop that took place in May 2010 has resulted in a public direction for putting the Food Charter into action with five priorities emerging from the community input:

  • Communication – informing the public and individuals or organizations involved in food issues of opportunities to become involved in food security initiatives.

  • Food Sovereignty – having control of the food we eat, where it comes from and how we access it (includes growing our own food)

  • Raising Awareness of Food Security – informing the public of environmental, social, and cultural issues related to food

  • Infrastructure – ensuring that Greater Sudbury has adequate transportation (for food and people), processing facilities, support for healthy environmental practices and accessible retail for local food.  In addition, knowledge of the economic impacts of local agriculture for our city would be beneficial.

  • Policy/Advocacy – Public discussions with elected officials and political candidates, inclusion of food security issues in policy development, support for local agriculture and social justice.

The SFCN wants to move beyond simply discussing the issues and serve as a catalyst for action that will address these priorities.  This is a unique opportunity to be a part of the movement towards food security for all of our community members.
