The Foodshed Project was at the 2009 Earth Day
Festival at the Market Square. It was a cold rainy day
but that didn't stop Sudburians from packing the big
Market Square barn to learn about enviro-friendly
organizations, initiatives, business, kids activities
and musical acts. In addition to spreading the good
word about The Foodshed Project and our upcoming
programs we also asked several individuals why they
thought buying local was important. The audio didn't
turn out great, so we have transcribed the answers.
Why do you think buying local is important?
Caroline
Ross,
Museum Curator Photogarpher
Buying locally is really important for the
environment because all the pesticides get into
our food and water and by buying locally your
reducing the greenhouse gases and emissions from
the cars.
Sarah
Walsh Clubbe and Brian Clubbe,
Students Sarah: I think buying locally is
important for the health of the community and
also reducing the carbon footprint that’s
coming from in and around Sudbury. You’re not
shipping it from somewhere as far as Argentina
or New Zealand. You can get galla apples all
year round from New Zealand. Brian: And I
think its just more fresh and delicious and
better for your body so eat local.
Sarah
McCue,
Student, Cambrian College
Buying local is very important because it
reduces greenhouse emissions and you get to keep
in contact with more people. It also reduces
pesticides.
Samantha
Robillard,
Student, CVDCS
Its important to buy local so that you can
support our farmers and the economic system in
Sudbury because the economic system is really
down right now so its probably a little
important for money.
Amy Boyle,
Student, McMaster Univ.
Its important to buy local because you want to
support your local farmers and if stuff is grown
locally why wouldn’t you want to.
Glenn
Thibeault,
MP, Sudbury
Buying local food is important because it
supports our local farmers. It provides us with
the food that we need because we could actually
feed Northern Ontario with Northern farmers and
secondly, we can actually reduce our carbon
footprint.
Justin
Barrow,
Student, Churchil PS
I think that buying local food is important
because you know what the food is usually and
because you would get a taste of your local
community almost.
